Injury Response for Cramps
Cramp Definition: strong muscle contraction that can be very painful lasting a few minutes
What should I do while I am cramping up?
While cramping up, massaging the area lightly can help reduce the amount of time the cramp lasts. Generally, you just have to wait until the cramp stops, which should be only a couple of minutes.
Causes and solutions for cramps in basketball players:
Overuse of a muscle
Response: Rest is the best solution if overuse of the muscle is the reason for a muscle cramp, however in my experience for cramps a day of rest or even just a couple of hours is sufficient rest.
Dehydration
Response: Drinking water or any fluid will help cure dehydration, however make sure to not only drink fluids after getting a cramp, but consistently every day in order to prevent future cramps as well as other side effects of dehydration.
Lack of Electrolytes
Response: Drinking any sports drink that contains electrolytes such as gatorade is an easy solution to having an electrolyte deficiency. I recommend and use myself Nuun tablets, which are be dissolved in water, as a healthier alternative to other sports drinks such as Gatorade, Powerade, etc.
